NLD GDM, with a sog Twist

Originally uploaded by sogrady.

Speaking of digital photography (and putting off my email for another minute or two), for the GNOME users out there I wanted to share a tweaked version of the Novell Linux Desktop Login package that I made a week or two ago. Sites like gnome-look.org carry many customized versions of this NLD package (some with scenic shots, some with some NSFW content), so I’m assuming it’s ok to customize and redistribute, although I haven’t gotten a response from an email I sent Tuomas. I’ll obviously take it down if this isn’t the case. Meantime GNOME users can grab the tarball here. The original photo, in case you want to make use of it otherwise (it’s CC licensed), is here, it’s a shot of a Maine sunset from the porch of our family place there (and where I’ll be in just a week or two).

The ability to do something like this, incidentally, is one of the reasons I love desktop Linux. Not everyone needs or wants to be able to customize every aspect of their desktop (see the legions of people still running with the stock wallpaper), but for those of us that do, it’s tough to beat the customization options that Linux offers. Enjoy.
