On the heels of my last entry concerning the back and forth between the Eclipse and Netbeans communities comes the latest interchange, which while barbed, does maintain (for the most part) a professional tone.
When last we checked in our competitors, this entry from Charles Ditzel was trumpeting not only new bells and whistles in NetBeans, but a steady stream of converts from Eclipse. To no one’s surprise, the Eclipse community then fired back in the person of David Orme (now w/db4objects and an individual that I had the pleasure of meeting at LWE). Yesterday, Charles responded to David’s response. Today, David responded to Charles’ reponse to his response to Charles’ original piece. Got all that? 😉
Either way, I’m happy to see the competition, although I remain convinced that the Java tools folks would be best served by reconciling the divide (many vendors and folks from both communities would disagree with me). Microsoft should be the target here, not each other. But I’m not holding my breath on that score.
In other news, new blogger (welcome sir!) Ian Skerrett has some interesting – though not exactly scientific – download numbers from a mirror at Buffalo University. I’d love to see someone take mirror data where it’s exposed and aggregate it. Is there anyone doing that now? It’s not authoritative, but it’s interesting.
