Well, I was really looking forward to posting about my travel experience which, for once, worked out in my favor. But you can thank the good old Bath, ME Police Department for throwing a wrench in that.
Anyway, flight from Vegas to Newark yesterday was uneventful. I actually missed a snowstorm instead of flying into it, will wonders never cease, so I wasn’t concerned about the weather. I was, however, concerned about getting from gate to gate in 38 minutes, my scheduled layover. Because as we all know, whenever you’ve got a tight connection there’s that one person at the front of the plane who just can’t get their massive bag extracted from the overhead compartment. But this time, I land and two minutes later get a text saying that my flight to Portland had been delayed 15 minutes – only too convenient for me. It actually ended up being more like a half hour, but whatever – a flight home is a flight home.
So I touched down in Portland around 11, collected my bags around 11:15 and set out for home. On the way, I figured, being the dutiful RedMonk employee that I am I thought I’d stop by the office on the way home. Our office in Bath is right on Front St – Bath’s Main St equivalent – and as I pulled up in front of the office around midnight there was nobody around. Normally I don’t even need to get out of the car to check email because our wireless signal reaches down from the third floor, but unfortunately my laptop was sucked dry on the plane and needed some juice. Up the stairs I go, “just to check email quickly,” I tell myself. Well, that predictably turned into 45 minutes. So a few minutes before 1 I pack up and head downstairs.
Wow. What’s my car doing on a flatbed? What are all these trucks for? Turns out they were trying to impound my car for “obstructing snow removal.” I ask why there weren’t any signs prohibiting parking, or why the road wasn’t blocked off. “Didn’t you see the trucks clearing?” No, they weren’t here at midnight. No one was. “Tough luck,” I’m told. $65 to have my car released, which I don’t really have any choice but to pay because it’s 1 in the morning, it’s cold, and as Robert Frost might say, I have miles to go before I sleep. To add insult to injury, I’m also supposed to pay a Bath, ME Parking Ticket for another $25 – we’ll see about that.
So like I said, if it’s not one thing it’s another. But hey – at least I’m home. And at least I caught them before they towed the damn thing away. It could have been a lot worse.
