My inaugural Got The Funk award goes to…

Shel Israel.

I don’t know Shel personally but I am looking forward to reading The Naked Conversation, a blook which he co-authored with Robert Scoble.

I was pleasantly surprised when he cited me as a constructive contributor to the book. I had thought that I just threw in my 2c every now and then on the blog.

But it seems Shel saw value there (I guess all the 2c contributions add up)- and paid me back by thanking me in public.

I had been meaning to call out Shel for that for a while, but then two blog entries today nudged me into getting on with it.

Shel says the way we live and govern is not about rich and poor, us and them, red and blue, rather it should be about decency; making a contribution. Amen, brother.

He is also not afraid to criticise those like Wal*Mart that are all take and no give.

So what exactly is a Got The Funk award? Its for someone that makes a contribution.

Or as Bootsy Collins would put it, (via Seth).

“You have to bring some funk to get some. You just can’t walk in a place and expect to get some funk. If you ain’t bring no funk, then you can’t get no funk… Another thing is, you can’t fake the funk or your nose will grow.”

When I first thought about Who Got The Funk, I applied it to organisations, namely IBM, Mozilla, Sun and SourceLabs. All these orgs make a contribution.

So does Shel. There will be more Got The Funk awards.
