In the last of our RSDC video series I had the chance to talk with John Simonds of IBM Analyst Relations. We spend our time talking about how John uses Web 2.0 tools and concepts to help out with his day-to-day analyst relations. For example, we talk about his use of Twitter several times with a couple of examples of how he and other IBM AR staff have monitored analysts Twitter streams to find things they need help with.

We then discuss blogging, esp. as it relates to Twitter. Check-out some of the photos of John’s from RSDC include “Mr. Black Socks,” and also the video he mentions.

Finally, I ask John about the tags they’ve been coming using for events like ibmrsdc08 for RSDC this year. At the end, I squeak in some therapy for my (personally) vexing issue of two or four character dates in tags – “08” vs. “2008.”

While at RSDC, Stephen O’Grady and I had the chance to talk with Dave Klavon (Director Quality and Requirements Management, Rational). We start out by quickly walking through the Rational testing and requirements management portfolio, and then dive into the testing silo.

We talk about testing in general and at the end get into a discussion about which aspects of the testing chain would do well in hosted, either as a SaaS or just in infrastructure in the cloud.

While at RSDC I had the chance to talk with Mike O’Rourke, VP of Development for IBM Rational. We started out talking about the productized Jazz, Rational Team Concert. Then I ask Mike to tell us about the types of customers and users Rational targets in general – ISVs, corporate developers, or others? Finally, being from BuildForge (acquired by IBM not too long ago), I ask Mike about new innovations and thinking in the build world.

While at RSDC this year, Stephen O’Grady and I had the chance to talk with Ashok Reddy about Jazz and Rational Team Concert, the big announcements of the show.

We start out by talking about the problem-context that Jazz is trying to address, namely, tooling the collaborative aspects of geo-distributed development team.

We then talk about another part of the overall announcement, the open services for life-cycle collaboration.

While at RSDC 2008, Stephen O’Grady and I had the chance to talk with Neeraj Chandra and Ken King (who joins us half-way through) on the topic of Telelogic, which IBM recently wrapped up the acquisition process for.

While Telelogic software focuses on the requirements process and supports overall application life-cycle management, its focus on “system” rather than simply software brings a new domain to Rational. In addition to that general topic, we talk about the future of Telelogic now that it’s part of IBM.

While at RSDC ’08, I had the chance to talk with IBM’s Laura Bennett, Manager of the alphaWorks Team. I start out by asking her to explain what alphaWorks does, the life-cycle of projects that go through it, and what new projects and services we’ll be seeing from alphaWorks soon.

We then talk about developerWorks briefly, mostly focusing on how upcoming social networking features will help users find other users who can help them out, filter the available content, and also hook them up closer to IBMers and other community members.

I had the chance to talk with Grady Booch at RSDC this year. I started out by asking him to explain why people are concerned about multi-core, concurrent programming – rather, the idea that there’s a lack of developer skill in that area. He does a good job of laying out why it’s an issue. I wanted to ask because, as I tell him, people seem to be freaking out about it, but few people have explained why it’s an issue, focusing on the how and the fixes to the problem.

We then talk about model-driven programming and how it relates, or doesn’t to the UML.

Finally, in joking around about how the proper way to say “UML” is “the UML,” Grady tells us about a funny pop-culture moment where the UML popped up recently.
